This course is designed to teach you to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) with a range of topics that involve everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in understanding BSL.
Level 1 is divided into three modules, each of which are achieved separately.
101 – Introduction to BSL
102 – Conversational BSL
103 – Communicate in BSL about everyday life
To achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, you must pass all units. BSL L 1 is a fully accredited course registered and governed by UK awarding body Signature.
At the end of the qualification, learners will be able to:
- Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
- Take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL
- Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
- Give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL
- Level 1 Award in British Sign Language can be taken without any previous BSL experience at any level.
Our teachers are all native BSL users as we believe this is the best way to learn a new language.
Course duration – 27 weeks 2 hours per week

Location – Darlington Golf Club – Car parking on site is available and has no charge.
